Colin's Story

"I like meeting different people and I would like to become a coach so that I can train other people to swim and compete at the Special Olympics."

Colin Marks is a champion on and off the medal podium. The 29-year-old not only holds numerous swimming world records but also holds a special place in the hearts of everyone whose path he crosses.

‘He’s unbelievable,’ Colin’s mum, Anne, said of her son. ‘He has a can-do attitude and doesn’t let anything stop him from doing what he sets his mind to. ‘He has completely changed our outlook on the world.’

Since finishing high school, Colin has been employed by Multicap—giving him independence and an income that allows him to travel for swimming. Colin’s first job was as a supported packaging employee at Premier Pack. He has now settled into a new role as a packaging assistant at Makeables, Rocklea, working four days a week. ‘I like my job and the different skills I have learnt through Multicap,’ Colin said.

Each day after work, the champion swimmer heads to the pool for training and has his sights set on becoming a coach … after a few more world records, perhaps. He currently holds world records with the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) in 800m and 200m freestyle and 25m breaststroke, and has twice been named top male swimmer by the DSISO.

He has competed internationally eight times and is working towards the 9th Down Syndrome World Swimming Championships in Canada in 2018. Swimming since he was 11 and competing for the past 11 years, Colin says that while he likes swimming, his first love is people.

‘I like meeting different people,’ he said. ‘And I would like to become a coach so that I can train other people to swim and compete at the Special Olympics.’

Despite his busy work and swimming schedule, Colin always finds time for a social life including hip-hop dancing and regular activities with Multicap’s social network, Avegates.

‘He’s definitely busy,’ Anne said. ‘And that helps with his fitness levels for swimming.’
