Green thumbs at Breakaway

Image caption: Dan has found a new passion with gardening

Through a number of gardening projects, Breakaway customers are learning everything from establishing food and herb gardens and planting local natives, to trimming, weeding and watering.

Breakaway Community Projects Service Leader Kate said along with developing gardening skills, the experience was encouraging customers to eat healthy foods.

“When we grow something ourselves, naturally we want to try it,” she said.

“Customers are interested in harvesting the vegetables and herbs they grow to use in their salads and cooking.

Customer Dan has ‘taken to gardening like a natural’ and says along with being outside, he likes learning new skills.

“I like moving the mulch and tying the tarps. I garden once a week and would like to do it more,” Dan said.

Kate works with customers and their support workers to establish and maintain gardens at their Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Short Term Accommodation (STA) homes, choosing plants that attract wildlife and create shade.

Two customers have been working on the ‘pocket habitat’ garden alongside food grown in raised planter boxes at the Breakaway office in Clontarf.

Customers also visit local nurseries and environmental centres to learn more and expand their experiences.
