Introducing our northern Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner, Amanda

When Amanda joined the Multicap team based in Rockhampton late last year, she already had a lot to bring to the table - work experience, personal experience, and a passion for specialist support services for regional Queensland.

It was Amanda’s personal experience with family who have autism spectrum disorder that originally sparked her interest in behaviour support.

“I was looking for help for my son and started investigating strategies and before I knew it, I was extremely passionate about behaviour support and even completed a number of courses,” Amanda said. “I already had a substantial history working in this industry as a manager for a disability employment service, NDIS Local Area Coordinator and more recently a NDIS Support Coordinator before I moved into behaviour support.

“Working at Multicap really appealed to me for a number of reasons. Being a large and established organisation, I knew there would be more support from staff, more resources available and more customers to help. The tagline ‘All ways. Always’ also appealed to me in addition to knowing and working with the current Regional Manager for customer delivery previously.

“Since joining Multicap, I have been blown away by the engagement with my team even though they are mostly based in Brisbane. It is fabulous being part of a team where we have excellent practices in place to deliver quality work and great plans to support every customer, meaning no challenge is too big,” she said.

As a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner, Amanda works with customers to improve their quality of life by ensuring their safety and their support teams’ safety, teaching skills that lead to a behaviour decline or engaging other supports that may be required to provide holistic support to the person.

While not a typical job objective, Amanda’s ultimate hope for every one of her customers is to do herself out of a job.

“I want to teach my customers skills and provide the support they need so that they can move on and no longer require my support in the future”.

“A customer’s behaviour is always a type of communication which can be something they aren’t getting or a means to escape or avoid something they don’t enjoy. As a Positive Behaviour Practitioner, I’m using a research-based process and empirical knowledge to guide a journey involving clue finding and process of elimination to get the best outcome for the customer.

While Amanda has impacted many customers lives in the past six months, she is particularly proud of one customer’s achievements.

“I provided a clear communication plan to the support team which allowed them to communicate consistently to the customer turning the customers behaviour around. It made such a drastic difference; the customer went from using verbal aggression every hour to now it is hardly ever seen!” Amanda said.

Amanda hopes that one day she will have a team based in Rockhampton to ensure the needs of the region, including townships that are currently overlooked by other service providers including Emerald, Blackwater, Biloela, Moura and Woorabinda.

As specialists in complex needs support, Multicap has decades of experience in understanding behaviours of concern and the possible underlying causes.

Multicap now offers Positive Behaviour Support in central and north Queensland regions.
