Sandra’s three decades at CEO’s side

When Sandra Williams started working at Multicap 30 years ago, things were a lot different to today.

“Multicap was much smaller then, it was a like a family,” she said. “And I was one of only two receptionists/administration officers for the entire organisation.”

But while Multicap has grown to become a thriving organisation of more than 1500 staff and 1700 customers, Sandra says the organisation’s purpose remains the same.

“There have been a lot of achievements for people with disability over the past 30 years,” she said. “It’s very rewarding to see the difference that can be made.”

Sandra started in her job as receptionist at Eight Mile Plains on 13 May 1991, and has worked with four CEOs and 10 Board Chairs

Over the years, Sandra moved from receptionist/administration officer to the role of Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer, also taking on the duties of Company Secretary.  She has remained in that role ever since.

It’s a role she describes as demanding but full of variety.

“You have to be in the moment and ready, because it’s a role that requires you to respond quickly to the challenges and changes,” Sandra said.

In 2017, Sandra was made a Life Member of Multicap.

“It’s a great honour,” she said. “There are not that many life members and so it came as a surprise.”

And while Sandra prepares herself for life after Multicap – she will semi-retire at the end of 2021 – she looks back on her 30 years with great pride.

“I’m really proud of my career,” the mum-of-two said. “I’m very grateful for the support I’ve had to grow in the role and learn new skills. When I first started, we were using typewriters!”

As for the number of ‘minutes’ she’s typed on that typewriter (and then her laptop), Sandra has lost count.

“I’ve taken lots of minutes over the years,” she said. “I remember the first Board meeting I attended and took minutes at – that was in at the deep end!”

While Sandra points to the customers and their journeys and achievements as her career highlight at Multicap, she’s also incredibly grateful for the people and friendships she’s made along the way.

“I was employed by Betty Read back in 1991. Betty is still working at Multicap and we have the opportunity to see each other when she’s onsite here at Eight Mile Plains and that is lovely,” she said.

Betty and Sandra are among the organisation’s longest-servicing employees.

Sandra says she’s enjoyed the opportunity to slowly transition from her busy role as Executive Assistant and Company Secretary before finishing at the end of 2021.

In the New Year, Sandra is excited to have more time to spend with her five grandchildren while taking on a part-time role with Multicap in the Safety and Quality team.

“To be able to stay on but in a different role for just two days is perfect really,” Sandra said.
